It's been a few track days since my last upload. I finally killed my old SuperCar 3R tires, and in the process I softened the front swaybar, pit the old Cobalt XR2s back on the rear, and set a new PB of 1:54.4, which is the comparison lap for this vid.
This lap is my new PB, first time in the 53s. I refreshed my alignment (some things had slipped) put the RE-71RS back on, bled the brakes, and stiffened my OEM rear bar by moving the endlinks to the outer holes on the SPL lower arms. I also added a COBB Titanium catback exhaust. Lastly, I swapped in fresh Cobalt XR2 rear pads on the old rotors, which I think was a mistake.
This was the first hot lap of the second session, and I dropped a full second from that previous PB! While the lap was fairly clean, I wasn't really pushing that hard.
I was having braking issues that felt the same as when I previously ran Cobalt XR4 rear pads, which was also the last time I ran the RE-71RS. I think the issue this time, and possibly with the XR4s, is that the new pads were not bedding to the old rotors fast enough. I think I was also getting pad knockback because the pedal was consistently a bit mushy, but xould be pumped up firmer. The overall result is that I had to really ease into the braking zones, as you can see in the speed delta entering turns 6, 8, 11, and 13. I'm pretty sure I lost at least half a second from that, and possibly as much as a second.
I think the swaybar change was an absolute win. The car rotated much better, most noticeable in 11, 14, and 15. Corner exits were much better as a result. I still want a bit more, though. I'm debating whether I want to get a 15mm OEM rear bar, a 16mm Perrin, or maybe step up to the thick boy hollow Eibach bars to try and keep the car flatter. The front end is starting to feel like it dumps over at full side load like it did on OEM bars and stock FLCAs with no roll center correction. 🫤
I do think it's possible that the exhaust added a wee bit of power, even though I wasn't expecting it to, because the acceleration curves are a bit steeper even in a straight line. It's also possible my oil overfill was burning off (it affects my top speeds a lot), or the more expensive Chevron from near the track is better than what I've been using, or the RE71-RS is better at putting down power, or any number of other things.
In any case, I think this was my last event for the year. I had an agricultural expedition between 1 and 2 late in the day that resulted in my steering being way off center. It's gonna take me a while to work through that, and weather is getting more wet than not now.
See you next year!
