Apollo Sport

The Gumpert Apollo Sport, produced from 2006-2010, represented German manufacturer Roland Gumpert track-focused road-legal supercar featuring modified Audi 4.2-liter V8 with twin turbochargers. The bi-turbo intercooled 4,163cc V8 produced 650 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 850 Nm torque at 4,000 rpm in Sport specification, with R variant capable of remarkable 800 PS and range-topping 2009 Apollo S producing 750 PS (740 bhp/552 kW). The 6-speed sequential transmission sent power to rear wheels, delivering 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and top speed of 224 mph with curb weight of just 1,200 kg (2,646 lbs), establishing extraordinary power-to-weight ratio.

Track performance was exceptional: the Apollo set 7:11.57 Nürburgring lap time achieved by Sport Auto magazine and lapped Top Gear test track in 1:17.1, holding fastest time for 2 years. The extreme aerodynamics generated massive downforce enabling cornering speeds approaching race car territory. The Apollo distinctive styling with prominent front splitter, side skirts, and large rear wing prioritized function over form, creating polarizing aesthetics focused entirely on aerodynamic performance. While the Apollo proved people generally prefer supercars with some practicality and refinement, it demonstrated pure track-weapon philosophy: minimal weight, maximum power, extreme aerodynamics, and uncompromising focus on lap times. The Gumpert Apollo established small manufacturer could compete with established supercar makers through engineering excellence and commitment to performance above all else.
