Which is faster?

The BMW M2 F87 is faster — 2s quicker on average across 11 shared tracks.

On paper, the BMW M2 F87 and the Lotus Elise Sport 220 Series 3 are both rear-drive, two-door coupes positioned for track-day enthusiasts. But that’s where the similarities end. Each car is a product of its maker’s singular vision: BMW’s turbocharged, muscular approach to modern performance versus Lotus’s unyielding commitment to lightness and purity. Their philosophies diverge so sharply that, on track, they might as well be speaking different dialects of the same language.

The M2 F87 is the archetypal “small M car,” heavy by Lotus standards but relatively compact in BMW’s universe. With 370 PS from its turbocharged straight-six and a curb weight over 3,200 lbs, it brings substantial power and torque. The car’s broad-shouldered attitude is evident at tracks like Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, where it blitzed a 2:34.61—a full 15 seconds ahead of the Elise’s 2:50. This is straight-line muscle and high-speed stability in action: Spa rewards horsepower and composure, both of which the M2 has in reserve. The turbo punch out of La Source, the surge up Eau Rouge, and the long haul to Les Combes all play to the BMW’s strengths. In these moments, the M2 feels like a force of nature—less concerned with delicacy than with flattening the circuit through torque and grip.

Contrast this with the Elise, which weighs nearly 1,300 lbs less. Lotus’s mantra—add lightness, then subtract more—translates into a chassis that seems allergic to inertia. The 1.8L Toyota-sourced engine is modest, but the Elise’s magic is in how its mass (or lack thereof) lets you place the car with surgical precision. On tight, technical circuits, this agility becomes weaponized. At Circuit Jules Tacheny Mettet, the Elise turned a 1:10.029, trouncing the M2’s 1:18.136 by over eight seconds. Mettet’s rapid transitions and short straights deny the BMW the chance to stretch its legs, while the Lotus flicks from apex to apex, rewarding drivers who trust its ultra-responsive front end and revel in its feedback.

This pattern repeats at circuits where momentum and precision matter more than outright speed. The Elise’s mid-engine layout and featherweight build deliver a telepathic connection—every surface change, every slip of the rear, is transmitted instantly. There’s little isolation, and even less forgiveness: the car expects the driver to be committed and delicate, exploiting its balance and transparency. The M2, in contrast, offers a broader margin for error. Its wider tires, stability systems, and more relaxed damping mean you can lean on power to rescue a corner, but you’ll always feel the mass working against you in tight sequences.

Yet, on longer, power-sensitive tracks, the M2 claws back ground. At Mount Panorama, the BMW edges the Elise by just over a second (2:21.6 vs 2:23), its turbo torque pulling hard up the mountain and down Conrod Straight. The story is similar at Tazio Nuvolari Circuit, where the M2’s 2:29 edges the Elise’s 2:30.3. Here, the BMW’s blend of power and mechanical grip shines—especially when the straights allow it to exploit its horsepower edge.

For the driver, the choice is philosophical. The M2 F87 is accessible, forgiving, and brutally effective on high-speed tracks or in the hands of those still learning the art of car control at pace. It flatters with power and grip, making speed easy to find. The Elise, on the other hand, is all about the conversation—every input, every shift in weight matters. It rewards the patient, the precise, and those willing to live without a safety net. On the stopwatch, each car finds its circuit, but in the paddock, it’s your driving style—and your appetite for involvement—that decides the winner.
