The Volkswagen Golf R Mk8 is the eighth-generation flagship performance variant of Volkswagen's iconic Golf hatchback, introduced for the 2022 model year. It features the EA888 evo4 turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 315 horsepower (320 PS/235 kW) in most markets, with torque figures of 295 lb-ft with the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic or 280 lb-ft with the 6-speed manual transmission (available only in North America). The evo4 engine incorporates significant improvements over the previous generation, including an upgraded turbocharger from Continental, enhanced direct fuel injection at 5,076 psi (350 bar) compared to 2,900 psi in the previous EA888 evo3, and refined variable valve timing and exhaust valve lift systems.
Power is delivered through Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, which can actively distribute torque between front and rear axles to optimize traction and handling characteristics. The DSG-equipped model achieves 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. The Mk8 Golf R builds on the legacy of previous Golf R models while incorporating Volkswagen's latest MQB Evo platform technology, offering a sophisticated blend of daily usability, all-weather capability, and serious performance. The combination of turbocharged power, advanced all-wheel drive, and the practical Golf package has made the Mk8 R popular among enthusiasts seeking a versatile high-performance hatchback suitable for both street driving and track day use.
