International Super Sportscar Circuit Anmerkungen

The International Super Sportscar Circuit is the longest of Rockingham Motor Speedway's thirteen configurations, a 3.12-kilometre (1.94-mile) "roval" that threads a technical infield road course through the heart of Britain's only banked oval superspeedway. Running clockwise over 13 turns, it marries a stretch of the venue's gently banked American-style oval with a man-made infield section, giving drivers a rare contrast between sustained high-speed banked running and slow, precise direction changes within a single lap. Rockingham, built on the reclaimed Deene iron-ore quarry near Corby in Northamptonshire, was conceived to bring American oval racing to the UK and opened in 2001 as the first banked oval constructed in Britain since Brooklands closed in 1939 — a circuit that once billed itself as the fastest in Europe.

Formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 2001 after almost a decade of planning, the purpose-built venue was overlooked by the 6,280-seat Rockingham Building and grandstands seating some 52,000 spectators. Its banked oval hosted the CART Champ Car World Series in its first two seasons, while the infield road courses — including this International Super Sportscar Circuit — carried British Touring Cars, sportscars, single-seaters and club racing through the 2000s and 2010s. Financial pressures pushed the venue into administration in 2017, and it staged its final motor race in November 2018. In 2021 the site was bought by Constellation Automotive — owner of Cinch and We Buy Any Car — for £80 million and now serves as a vehicle storage and logistics centre, though it still appears in Cinch's "Fast Laps" videos.

As a driver's challenge, the International Super Sportscar Circuit rewards adaptability. Cars carry big speed onto the banking before braking hard for the infield complex, where a sequence of tight, flowing corners demands mechanical grip, patience on entry and clean traction out of the slow apexes — the polar opposite of the momentum-based banked section. With 13 corners packed into under two miles and few genuine straights, lap times reflect a rhythm-and-braking circuit rather than an outright power track, making it a searching test of car balance and driver precision. Limited competitive data survives from the venue's active years, but its distinctive roval character keeps it among the more unusual road courses in British motorsport history.
