This is the first race weekend I've had with "Abby" after almost five years of ownership...but that's another story. Abby is the ex-Doc Bundy 1992 Lotus X180R he used to win that year's IMSA Supercar Championship. Here she's entered in Lime Rock Park's Historics 43 which took place over Labor Day Weekend.
We were entered in the World Challenge group which had cars ranging from an '84 GTI to mid-'00 Porsche GT3 Cup cars and wicked late model BMW M3s. I'm not really sure how they were considered World Challenge cars but that's not my call. The lap time disparity was enormous. Despite this, everyone played nicely and kept to the spirit of the Historic racing.
As for me, I had a lot to learn. Abby is turbo charged and the key to speed is keeping the boost up to rocket out of corners. That means left-foot braking, which I don't do in any of my other race cars...especially Moose, my Spec Miata. In fact, here I'm using the brakes in turns I would normally just breathe off the throttle, like the Right Hander in the Esses, just to keep the boost pressure up.
The first two races on Saturday were a bit boring for me as I was about 1.5 seconds faster than the next slowest car and about 1.5 seconds slower than the next fastest car. However, Monday's races 3 and 4 were surprisingly fun. In race 3 I mixed it up with an '88 M3 and in race 4 I had a lot of fun with twins in twin RX8s. I think we put on a good show of close but clean racing.
