RX7 S4 FC
Notes
The Mazda RX-7 FC Series 4 (S4), spanning 1986-1988 model years (turbocharged from 1987), represented the second-generation RX-7 featuring refined styling and improved rotary engine technology. The naturally aspirated 13B twin-rotor producing 146 hp at 6,500 rpm and 138 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm with 9.4:1 compression ratio served as the base engine for 1986-1988. The Turbo II variant, introduced in North America for 1987, featured the 13BT turbocharged rotary producing 182 hp at 6,500 rpm and 183 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm with 8.5:1 compression ratio, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission (gear ratios: 3.48, 2.02, 1.39, 1.00, 0.76) and 4.10 final drive ratio.
Dimensions included 168.9-inch length, 66.5-inch width, 49.8-inch height, and 95.3-inch wheelbase, with curb weight of 2,850-2,870 lbs for Turbo II models. The FC platform refined the rotary sports car formula with improved aerodynamics, better weight distribution, and modern styling while maintaining the unique characteristics of Mazda Wankel rotary engine: smooth power delivery, high-revving nature, and compact dimensions. The S4 FC established the RX-7 as a serious sports car competitor to Porsche 944 and Nissan 300ZX, offering unique rotary performance with excellent handling dynamics. The turbocharged variants became particularly popular for tuning and motorsport, with the 13BT platform proving capable of significant power increases through aftermarket modifications.
