Automotodrom Grobnik Notas

Automotodrom Grobnik, nestled near Rijeka, Croatia, is a challenging and historic motorsport circuit. Opened in 1978 as an alternative to the then-dangerous Opatija street circuit, Grobnik quickly became a popular venue for international racing events. Its initial purpose was to provide a safer environment for motorcycle racing, and it achieved that aim, hosting several rounds of the Motorcycle World Championship. However, the circuit also embraces a wide variety of motorsports, including car racing, hill climbs, and drifting events.

The 4.174-kilometer (2.594-mile) track layout is characterized by a series of fast, sweeping corners and undulating terrain. It's a high-speed circuit that rewards bravery and precision. The main straight, approximately 670 meters long, allows for significant acceleration. Subsequent corners like the fast right-hander at Turn 1 and the flowing esses of Turns 3 and 4 demand commitment and a well-balanced car. The final section of the track features a tighter, more technical sequence of turns, testing braking and car control. The circuit is relatively wide, offering good overtaking opportunities.

Technically, Grobnik is known for its abrasive asphalt and the demands it places on tires. The elevation changes and the high-speed nature of the circuit also put a strain on engines and brakes. While the circuit has been resurfaced and upgraded over the years, it retains its classic character. Grobnik is renowned for its challenging nature, requiring drivers to be fully committed and precise. It's a track that favors skill over horsepower, rewarding those who can master its unique blend of high-speed corners and technical sections. Its location, surrounded by stunning Croatian scenery, adds to its appeal.

Today, Automotodrom Grobnik hosts a variety of national and international racing series, including motorcycle championships, touring car races, and historic vehicle events. It also serves as a popular venue for track days and driver training programs, allowing enthusiasts to experience the thrill of racing on a classic European circuit. What sets Grobnik apart is its blend of old-school charm, challenging layout, and accessibility, making it a favorite among drivers and fans alike.
