Teretonga Park Notas

Teretonga Park, located near Invercargill in New Zealand's South Island, holds the distinction of being the country's oldest purpose-built motor racing circuit, opening its gates in 1957. Initially conceived as a gravel track, it was quickly sealed with asphalt, solidifying its place as a key venue in New Zealand motorsport history.

The 2.414 km (1.500 mi) circuit features a classic, fast-flowing layout that rewards bravery and momentum. Its relatively flat topography and sweeping corners encourage drivers to maintain high speeds throughout the lap. The iconic "Loop" is a challenging, decreasing-radius corner that demands precision and commitment. Other notable sections include the fast sweeper leading onto the main straight and the slightly banked final corner, providing opportunities for overtaking.

Technically, Teretonga Park isn't overly demanding on cars, favoring good handling and aerodynamic efficiency over outright horsepower. However, the abrasive track surface can be tough on tires, particularly in warmer conditions. The circuit's exposed location also means that wind can play a significant role, affecting car balance and braking points.

Teretonga Park hosts a wide range of motorsport events, including national championship rounds for various categories such as Formula Ford, Toyota Racing Series, and saloon cars. Historic racing is also a popular feature, with classic cars regularly gracing the track. The circuit's rich history and challenging layout make it a favorite among both drivers and spectators. Its unique charm lies in its simplicity and the raw, unfiltered experience it offers, harking back to a golden era of motor racing.
