Continental Divide Raceways Notes

Continental Divide Raceways (CDR) is a motorsports complex located near Deer Trail, Colorado, about an hour east of Denver. Its history dates back to the early 1960s when a group of local racing enthusiasts sought to create a dedicated road racing facility in the region. The track officially opened in 1965 and quickly became a popular venue for both amateur and professional racing events.

The track layout is a challenging 2.8-mile road course featuring a blend of high-speed straights, sweeping corners, and technical sections. It is known for its elevation changes, reflecting the rolling terrain of the surrounding plains. The original design incorporated nine turns, some of which have been subtly modified over the years to improve safety and flow. A key feature is the long front straight, allowing cars to reach high speeds before braking hard for Turn 1. The back section includes a series of esses and a challenging uphill climb. The track also boasts a separate drag strip.

CDR has hosted a wide variety of racing disciplines throughout its history, including SCCA regional and national events, motorcycle races, and vintage car gatherings. It has also been used for driver training and testing. The track's technical characteristics make it suitable for both open-wheel cars and sports cars, and its location in the high plains presents unique challenges related to altitude and weather conditions.

What makes Continental Divide Raceways unique is its blend of historical significance and challenging layout. It represents a bygone era of grassroots motorsport in the United States. Despite facing periods of closure and uncertainty, CDR has persevered and continues to serve as a vital hub for racing enthusiasts in the Rocky Mountain region. Its commitment to providing a safe and accessible environment for motorsports has solidified its position as a beloved and respected racing facility.
