This video features the highly anticipated return of the ASM AP1 S2000 Car #1 to Tsukuba Circuit TC2000 after a five-year absence. Driven by Hiroki Katoh, this iconic Honda S2000 achieved an impressive lap time of 0:56.875 during the Pingu Attack practice event on February 16, 2024.

The ASM team has a storied history in Japan's NA Class of Time Attack, with Car #1 being the first S2000 to break into the 56-second lap time in February 2019. This event marked a significant shakedown for the car, which has seen some notable changes since its retirement in 2019, while largely retaining its core configuration.

Key modifications include the SPL ASM I.S. widebody, a Succeed Sports chassis-mounted rear wing, and ASM ZF 3-way dampers by Sachs with Hyperco springs. The car runs on BBS Clear Ways TT-10F wheels (295/30/18 Advan A050 tires) and AP Racing brakes (F/R). The engine remains the ASM Toda F20C 2.4L, producing 330PS, and has been re-tuned. The vehicle weighs 986 kg (2019 spec).

Inside, the chassis processing remains consistent with the 2019 car. The Motec ECU has been relocated from the passenger kick panel to the passenger floorboard, alongside other electronics and the battery, optimizing weight distribution. The new front end features a paint-matched splitter extending further from the bumper, complemented by a modern 3D design underneath. Additionally, 3D-printed aero fins on the mirror stays and a rebuilt wing stay box in reinforced carbon contribute to improved aerodynamics and weight savings.

It's a testament to Shinichiro Kanayama's dedication to continue developing this important car in time attack, despite its hiatus. It was truly a great experience to witness this legendary machine back on track.
