I went to SIC today to get some proper testing of the new setup on the GT-R under my belt. The car is running on Pirelli semi-slicks for the first time, but unfortunately it rained at the recent ZTH TimeToAttack event and we did not get the chance to go all out. SIC had a 1 hour open track slot at 10am in between formula car testing from Mon-Wed, so it was a great chance to figure out what the GT-R could do with the new stuff...
The first thing that is apparent from the video is that I did not brake particularly late for T1 - I was fiddling with my lap timer and GoPro on the warm up lap, and only realised at T15 before the start of the hot lap that my brakes weren't warmed up sufficiently. Other hot laps revealed that the car would stop without a problem from the 150m marker even when I slingshot onto the main street running high boost... reassuring that the Dixcel brakes are holding up! ;)
Time loss at - T2, T4, T9, T15 - if you watch closely, you can see that the car 'hops' around on turn in - the tyre profile we have chosen is too big, and the tyres are rubbing something. As the car is unsettled, the electronics then refuse to give me full power and the car bogs down from mid corner to exit. Without this problem alone, we would have easily gone under 2m 20s today whilst testing.
The GT-R could not be lowered to my usual setting for track due to the tyre sizing... this affected the roll centre and balance through faster and high-G corners like T5-6 and T7-8. The car would normally scythe to the apex on Dunlop OEM street tyres, but I had to ease up or the car would understeer from the weight leaning to the outside. Tentative jabs at the throttle did not bring the tail around (T6, T14 exit), and would only send the car wider. Guess the new rear diffuser is helping stick the rear end firmly onto the track...
2014 to-do list: change tyre sizes, lower the car and run high boost for full power.
