LYDDEN HILL RACE CIRCUIT Notes

Lydden Hill Race Circuit, nestled in the Kent countryside near Wootton, England, holds the distinction of being the UK's shortest permanent race circuit and the birthplace of rallycross. Its history dates back to 1955, initially as a motorcycle scrambling venue. In 1967, the circuit hosted the first ever rallycross event, forever cementing its place in motorsport history.

The circuit's layout is a unique blend of asphalt and gravel, creating a challenging and unpredictable experience for drivers. Its short length, approximately 1 mile (1.6 km), packs in a variety of corners, including the notorious Hairy Hill, a steep downhill section that tests driver bravery and car control. The mix of surfaces demands a versatile car setup and adaptable driving style, rewarding both outright speed and tactical awareness.

Technically, Lydden Hill is characterized by its tight and twisty nature. Overtaking opportunities are scarce and often require daring maneuvers. The jump section, often incorporated into the rallycross layout, adds another dimension to the challenge. The circuit's compact size also means that spectators are never far from the action, creating an intimate and exciting atmosphere.

Lydden Hill primarily hosts rallycross events, ranging from club-level competitions to prestigious international championships like the British Rallycross Championship and, historically, rounds of the FIA World Rallycross Championship. The circuit also sees use for other forms of motorsport, including stock car racing, motorcycle racing, and testing sessions. Its unique blend of surfaces and challenging layout makes it a popular choice for driver training and vehicle development.

What truly sets Lydden Hill apart is its historical significance as the home of rallycross. Its intimate setting, challenging layout, and the palpable sense of history combine to create a motorsport experience unlike any other. The circuit's enduring popularity is a testament to its unique character and its pivotal role in the evolution of rallycross as a global motorsport discipline.
