Pierre Gasly made history by recording the fastest lap in the 1,000th Formula 1 Grand Prix, held at the Shanghai International Circuit. During the final stages of the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix, Red Bull equipped Gasly's car with fresh soft tires, allowing him to achieve a DHL Fastest Lap time of 1:34.742. This performance secured an additional championship point, which Sebastian Vettel consequently lost.
Gasly expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I'm happy to score my first fastest lap in F1 today. We saw that we had quite a big margin behind us in the last few laps, so we decided to go for it and have an extra pit stop which worked. We are quite happy to finish in the points and take the extra point for fastest lap with us."
Gasly finished the race in P6, becoming the third driver to claim the DHL Fastest Lap award in the 2019 season, following Charles Leclerc's achievement in Bahrain. Notably, Michael Schumacher still holds the overall lap record for the Shanghai International Circuit, having set a time of 1:32.238 in his Ferrari in 2004, approximately two and a half seconds faster than Gasly's lap.
