The Volkswagen ID.R is a fully electric prototype race car designed to showcase Volkswagen's advancements in electric mobility and motorsport technology. Developed by Volkswagen Motorsport, the ID.R combines cutting-edge aerodynamics, lightweight engineering, and an advanced electric powertrain to achieve exceptional performance.
Powered by two electric motors, the ID.R delivers a combined output of 500 kW (approximately 670 horsepower) and produces 650 Nm of torque. The car's battery system is engineered for rapid energy deployment, providing the high power levels needed for competitive motorsport while ensuring efficient energy management. With a total weight under 1,100 kg, including the driver, the ID.R achieves impressive acceleration, going from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.25 seconds, faster than a Formula 1 car.
Aerodynamic design is a key feature of the ID.R, with an emphasis on high downforce and minimal drag, tailored to specific racing conditions. Its large rear wing and carefully sculpted bodywork optimize airflow, ensuring maximum stability and grip. The ID.R has set numerous records in prestigious events, including the all-time fastest run at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2018 with a time of 7:57.148, the fastest lap for an electric vehicle at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2019 with a time of 6:05.336, and the fastest electric lap at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. These achievements highlight its status as a trailblazer in electric motorsport and a symbol of Volkswagen's commitment to a sustainable, high-performance future.
