XJ220

Notes

The Jaguar XJ220, launched in 1992 with 275 examples produced through 1994, held the title of world fastest production car at 213 mph (217.1 mph unrestricted). Designed originally with V12 engine, the production XJ220 instead featured heavily redesigned 3,498 cc twin-turbocharged V6 (Jaguar/TWR JV6 designation) derived from Austin Rover V64V V6 engine used in Metro 6R4 rally car. Engineers increased displacement to 3.5 liters, strengthened internals, and added two Garrett TO3 turbochargers to the 90-degree bank angle, four-valves-per-cylinder, belt-driven DOHC engine, producing 542 hp and 475 lb-ft torque. Despite weighing just 1,470 kg, the XJ220 achieved 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

The XJ220 remains the fastest Jaguar ever produced and fastest V6-powered production car to date. The Guinness World Record for fastest standard production car stood at 217.1 mph until 1998 when McLaren F1 exceeded 240 mph. The XJ220 GT1 race car competed successfully in GT racing, while XJ220S TWR variant offered enhanced track performance. The combination of twin-turbo V6 (controversial replacement for originally-promised V12), aluminum honeycomb monocoque chassis, distinctive styling, and world-record performance established the XJ220 as Jaguar return to supercar production. The V6 configuration, though initially criticized, proved lighter and more powerful than planned V12, enabling the record-breaking performance that defined the XJ220 legacy.
