Circuito Internacional de Vila Real Notes

The Circuito Internacional de Vila Real, located in Vila Real, Portugal, is a historic street circuit with a rich motorsport heritage dating back to 1931. Initially a simple road course, it has undergone several revisions over the decades, always retaining its challenging and unforgiving nature. The modern iteration, reintroduced in 2014 after a long hiatus, is approximately 4.785 km (2.97 miles) long.

The circuit's layout is characterized by a blend of fast straights and tight, technical corners, making it a true test of driver skill and car setup. Its undulating terrain, common to street circuits, contributes to blind crests and challenging braking zones. Notable sections include the infamous "Curva do Cemitério" (Cemetery Corner), a fast, sweeping right-hander that demands precision and commitment, and the tight hairpin at the bottom of the hill. The start/finish straight is relatively short, leading into a complex series of corners that often create overtaking opportunities.

Vila Real's technical characteristics are demanding. The circuit's narrow width leaves little margin for error, rewarding drivers who can maintain a consistent pace and avoid contact with the barriers. The bumpy surface and varying grip levels add to the challenge, requiring teams to find a compromise between downforce and mechanical grip. The circuit is primarily suited for touring cars and GT racing, although Formula Three and other support categories have also featured in race weekends. Its unique atmosphere, with passionate local fans lining the streets, makes it a truly special event on the motorsport calendar.

The circuit is unique because it combines the thrill of a high-speed street circuit with a traditional, old-school feel. Unlike many modern circuits, Vila Real retains its raw and unforgiving character, making it a favourite among drivers and fans alike. The track's history, coupled with its challenging layout and enthusiastic fanbase, solidifies its place as one of Portugal's most iconic motorsport venues.
