E82 128i

Notes

The BMW E82 128i is the coupe variant of BMW's first-generation 1 Series, sold exclusively in North America from October 2007 to August 2013. The 128i features BMW's acclaimed naturally aspirated N52 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 230 horsepower (228 hp/172 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 200 lb-ft (271 Nm) of torque at 2,750 rpm. Despite being the "entry-level" 1 Series coupe in North America, the 128i delivers 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds with mid-14-second quarter-mile times, aided by the car's relatively light weight and BMW's characteristically linear power delivery that builds smoothly to the 7,000 rpm redline.

The E82 128i embodies core BMW driving principles in their purest form: naturally aspirated inline-six power, rear-wheel drive, near-50/50 weight distribution, precise steering, and balanced chassis dynamics in a compact, lightweight package. Available with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, the 128i offered engaging driving dynamics at accessible price points. The compact dimensions, excellent visibility, and manageable power make the 128i particularly well-suited for driver development and competitive club racing, where it has become popular in endurance racing series and track day events. The N52 engine is known for reliability and smooth operation, though the E82 platform does share some common BMW maintenance items including cooling system components and suspension bushings. As BMW has moved away from naturally aspirated engines and compact rear-drive coupes, the E82 128i has gained appreciation as one of the last true "driver's BMWs" at accessible pricing, offering classic BMW character without the complexity and expense of turbocharged M models.
