New Jersey Motorsports Park-NJMP Thunderbolt w/Chicane T3 (Pre 2024)
The New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) is a set of motorcycle and automobile racing facilities comprised of two main road courses, Lighting and Thunderbolt, and an additional go-kart racing complex called Tempest. It started operations back in 2008 and offers the possibility to host racing events on each racetrack, separately and simultaneously. It is located right beside the military airport of Millville, New Jersey. The humid subtropical climate prevalent in the southern part of New Jersey means the tracks tend to be humid most of the year, with up to 15 days of light precipitation a month on average.
Some of the major events where NJMP is a staple part of the calendar are the Trans-Am Series, CCS, ARCA Racing, SCCA, or the AMA Superbike Championship, to name a few. Both Lighting and Thunderbolt road courses have an asphalt surface, with noticeable elevation changes and long straightaways combined with sweeper curves, resulting in fast driving circuits. The average speed in Lighting is 92 mph and in Thunderbolt is 88 mph. Both racetracks have a clockwise direction and open seating throughout the course, with a large capacity for spectators' accommodation.
The Thunderbolt with Chicane Turn 3 configuration at New Jersey Motorsports Park adds a chicane element at Turn 3 to the facility's technical 1.9-mile Thunderbolt circuit located near Millville in southern New Jersey. The chicane insertion at T3 creates an additional braking zone that transforms corner approach characteristics, serving events requiring specific technical challenges or adhering to series regulations mandating chicane configurations. This variant demonstrates NJMP's layout flexibility through temporary modifications to the standard Thunderbolt circuit.
Operating the Thunderbolt with Chicane T3 showcases New Jersey Motorsports Park's ability to customize the Thunderbolt layout matching varied event requirements without permanent track modifications. The T3 chicane reduces speeds through the section while creating overtaking opportunities, altering racing dynamics and tire degradation patterns. Southern New Jersey's climate creates seasonal racing windows operating primarily April through November. The Thunderbolt with Chicane T3 configuration serves specific series or events requiring the technical addition, demonstrating modern circuit philosophy where temporary chicanes allow layout customization at NJMP's premier East Coast motorsport facility.
