BMW’s M division has always blurred the line between outright speed and driving engagement, but few pairs illustrate the nuances of this balancing act better than the F90 M5 and the G82 M4 Competition. On the surface, both are formidable on paper: turbocharged, bristling with power, and honed on the Nürburgring. Yet, their lap records across circuits like the Nürburgring Nordschleife and Sachsenring tell a deeper story about engineering philosophy, driving feel, and the subtle trade-offs baked into their DNA.

The F90 M5 is a study in controlled violence. Its 600 PS twin-turbo V8 and all-wheel-drive system deliver a tidal wave of torque (nearly 750 Nm) to all four corners, giving it an almost clinical ability to put down power out of even the slowest corners. But this comes at a cost: 4,345 lbs of curb weight and a chassis tuned for high-speed composure over raw intimacy. At the limit, the M5 feels unflappable—more executive missile than track scalpel. Even when fitted with sticky Michelin Cup 2s, its lap at the Nordschleife—a 7:38.92 in Christian Gebhardt’s hands—reveals a car that’s fast, but always slightly at arm’s length. The steering is filtered, the transitions smoothed out by mass and technology. The car flatters the ambitious, providing a safety net of traction and stability, but the sense of mechanical connection is muted compared to its smaller sibling.

The M4 Competition G82, by contrast, is a car that invites its driver to dance closer to the edge. Shedding nearly 500 lbs, and powered by a straight-six turbocharged engine, the M4 is lighter on its feet and more eager to rotate. Its rear-wheel-drive layout and aggressive suspension geometry mean it demands—and rewards—precise inputs. This is evident in its 7:30.79 Nordschleife lap, besting the M5 by over 8 seconds, and a 1:32.76 at Sachsenring, 1.6 seconds faster on a technical, corner-heavy track. The M4’s steering is sharper, feedback more immediate, and the chassis constantly telegraphs grip levels—especially when shod with Cup 2 or even AR-1 rubber. But there’s a trade-off: without AWD to bail you out, the M4 asks for more finesse, particularly on corner exit. It’s a car that rewards commitment and punishes ham-fistedness, making it the thinking driver’s choice for those who want to exploit every tenth.

There’s more at play than just lap times. The M5’s AWD grip and torque-rich powerband make it devastatingly effective on circuits with long straights and variable surfaces, while its weight and sheer size can sap agility in tight, technical sections. On tracks like Nürburgring BTG, the M4 still edges ahead—posting a 7:26 to the M5’s 7:32.59—but it’s in the transitions and mid-corner speeds where the M4 feels most alive. The M5, on the other hand, reassures rather than excites, its electronics and AWD system smoothing over mistakes and letting less experienced drivers extract surprising pace, but never quite delivering the raw, unfiltered feedback of the rear-drive M4.

In the end, choosing between these two is less about chasing numbers than picking your preferred flavor of M. The F90 M5 is the consummate tool for those who want pace with composure and a wide margin for error—ideal for fast, high-stakes tracks or all-weather confidence. The G82 M4 Competition is built for the driver who craves interaction, who wants to feel every nuance of the circuit and is willing to work for every tenth. Both are deeply competent, but they speak to different driving souls: the M5 is a conversation at arm’s length; the M4, a direct line from steering to spine, always inviting you to push just a little harder.
