Join Terry Fair for test laps in Mark Council's 2002 Chevrolet Corvette C5 at Motorsport Ranch-MSR Cresson on December 2, 2016. The primary goal was to evaluate a newly developed Vorshlag ABS system installed in the car.
Despite the chilly 65°F track temperature, the BFG Rival-S tires (315F/335R) and Essex/AP sprint front brake kit performed well. However, the car's autocross-oriented setup, featuring MCS TT2 coilovers and springs, resulted in a loose rear end at turn-in, making for a challenging track experience. Terry also encountered shifting difficulties due to the fixed racing seat position.
This video captures a session after initial adjustments were made. While the car was still a bit 'berserk,' Terry managed a best lap time of 1:22.581. This time is competitive with his previous runs in C6 Z06 and C7 Grand Sport models on similar tires, indicating strong potential. One lap was notably affected by traffic from a "Lotus Parade." Further setup refinements, improved brake cooling, and a more ergonomic seating/shifting arrangement are expected to unlock even faster times from this Corvette.
The Vorshlag ABS system, a kit soon to be offered for this chassis, performed flawlessly, effectively mitigating the common "ice mode" issue found in GM's factory ABS on track.
