Exige Series 1

Notes

The Lotus Exige Series 1, produced from June 2000 to November 2001 with 604 examples manufactured, represented Lotus track-focused evolution of the Elise platform featuring a fixed hardtop roof and enhanced aerodynamics. Powered by the 1.8-liter (1,796cc) all-aluminum Rover K-series VHPD (Very High Performance Derivative) inline-four with DOHC four-valve head, the standard version produced 177 bhp at 7,800 rpm and 127 lb-ft at 6,750 rpm, while the Track/190 specification offered 190 bhp at 7,800 rpm and 126 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. Weight reduction achieved 724 kg dry (31 kg less than standard Elise), enabling extraordinary performance: 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and top speed of 136 mph, delivering exceptional power-to-weight ratio.

The five-speed manual transmission sent power through the rear wheels, while twelve-spoke anthracite-finish Rimstock wheels (7x16 front, 8.5x17 rear) wore Yokohama A039 tires (195/50 R16 and 225/45 R17). The single-seat cockpit accommodated drivers between 5 foot 6 inches and 6 foot 4 inches, with a removable flat-bottomed steering wheel incorporating shift indicator and AiM EVO4 datalogger displaying engine vitals, ride height, brake pressure, and steering position. Geartronics pneumatic system enabled no-lift shifting via carbon fiber paddles. Of 604 produced, 177 were left-hand drive. The Series 1 Exige established Lotus as the benchmark for lightweight, track-focused road cars, offering pure driving dynamics and race car performance in a street-legal package.
