Ever since I began tracking my Proton Saga, Valerie, I've harbored the dream of surpassing the elusive 3-minute laptime benchmark set for street cars of this caliber. Equipped with only a modest 1.3-liter engine paired with a 4-speed automatic slushbox (where more drivetrain loss equals less wheel horsepower), the perceived ceiling appeared quite high. However, after 4 SIC track days, that ceiling seemed less daunting. Nonetheless, on this particular hot lap, it can be argued that I might have matched or even beaten the 3-minute mark under perfect conditions and if I were a flawless driver. Yet, expecting both perfection and ideal conditions is as improbable as expecting a monsoon in the heart of the Saudi Arabian desert. Dwelling solely on 'what could have been' would only ensnare myself in a futile cycle of self-despair. The car had more to offer, I must improve as a driver, and the conditions were far from perfect. 3:03:26.
