Lancer Evolution V

Notes

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V, produced from 1998 to 1999, represents the fifth iteration of Mitsubishi's legendary rally-bred performance sedan. The Evo V features the 4G63T turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 276 horsepower (206 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 275 lb-ft (373 Nm) of torque at 3,000 rpm, restricted by Japan's gentleman's agreement though actual output often exceeded official figures. Power is delivered through a 5-speed manual transmission and Mitsubishi's Active Yaw Control (AYC) all-wheel-drive system, which actively distributes torque between the rear wheels for improved handling and cornering performance.

The Evolution V introduced significant improvements over the Evo IV, including revised suspension geometry, larger brakes with Brembo calipers, a new front bumper with enlarged air intakes for improved cooling, and a more aggressive rear wing for increased downforce. The AYC system was a major advancement, using an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential to enhance stability and cornering precision. Weighing approximately 2,910 pounds (1,320 kg), the Evo V achieves 0-60 mph in approximately 4.6 seconds with a top speed limited to 155 mph. Special variants including the RS (lightweight), GSR (grand touring), and the limited-production WRC-inspired models offered different levels of equipment and performance focus. The Evolution V earned fame through its World Rally Championship success with Tommi Mäkinen securing his third consecutive drivers' title in 1998. Today, the Evo V is highly sought after by enthusiasts for its perfect balance of rally heritage, advanced AWD technology, and tuning potential, with clean examples commanding premium prices in the collector market.
