El Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII, producido entre 2001 y 2003, introdujo avances significativos respecto a su predecesor, el Evo VI. Construido sobre la plataforma CT9A, más grande y rígida, mejoró la maniobrabilidad y estabilidad sin perder el motor turboalimentado 2.0 litros 4G63. Un diferencial central activo (ACD) recién desarrollado y un sistema Super Active Yaw Control (S-AYC) más avanzado aumentaron la tracción y la capacidad en curvas. El Evo VII también presentó una aerodinámica revisada, un frontal más agresivo y un alerón trasero funcional para mayor carga aerodinámica. Las mejoras interiores incluyeron asientos deportivos Recaro y un diseño de tablero modernizado. Aunque es ligeramente más pesado que el Evo VI, la tecnología añadida lo convirtió en una máquina de alto rendimiento más capaz, sentando las bases para futuros modelos Evolution.
