This video captures a lap at Atlanta Motorsports Park in a bone stock 2017 Ford Focus RS2, featuring a sunroof, making it one of the heavier RS configurations. The car was recently acquired, and this track day was part of a local Track Night in America event. Notably, the original 6k mile Cup 2 tires were replaced with Hankook V12 Evo2 tires by the dealership, effectively making the car perform "worse than stock" in terms of grip.
Despite the tire handicap and being the driver's second time at AMP, the car performed surprisingly well. Initial brake engagement issues on the first mild-pace lap were attributed to the previous owner's less aggressive driving. The Hankook tires tended to get greasy after just one lap at pace, and the Rear Drive Unit (RDU) disengaged, forcing the car into FWD mode after only four laps in the first session. However, no further RDU issues were encountered after that initial session.
The driver believes the Focus RS is a highly capable car. With factory Pilot Super Sport tires, it's estimated to achieve low 1:35s or high 1:34s, and with the original Cup2 tires, it could potentially reach the 1:33 range, which is exceptionally fast for a bone stock car with a power-to-weight ratio of approximately 11.5 to 1. The achieved 1:35 lap time is particularly impressive as it matches a 1:35.9 lap set by a professional driver in a new Honda Civic Type R equipped with proper tires.
