1983: AE86 Corolla introduced as Levin/Trueno variants. 4A-GE 1.6L DOHC inline-four with 112hp (US) / 128hp (JDM). Rear-wheel drive, five-speed manual transmission. MacPherson strut front, four-link rear axle. ~2,200 lb weight, 50/50 distribution. Optional LSD.
1984: Zenki (early period) production continued. Individual throttle bodies, 7,600 rpm redline. Growing popularity autocross and club racing. Lightweight construction, balanced chassis establishing enthusiast following.
1985: Final zenki year before styling refresh. Proven reliability, affordable performance. Emerging drift culture adoption in Japan recognizing AE86's oversteer characteristics and rear-drive layout ideal for sideways driving techniques.
1986: Kouki (latter period) introduced with revised front/rear styling. Continued 4A-GE specification. Strong aftermarket support developing performance upgrades, suspension modifications. Initial D manga publication beginning establishing AE86 pop culture status.
1987: Final production year marking end rear-drive Corolla era. AE86 achieving cult status among enthusiasts. Front-drive E90 successor prioritizing practicality over driving dynamics. Hachi-roku legend established enduring decades inspiring global drift culture and enthusiast devotion.
