MX-5 Cup Mk2
Notes
The Mazda MX-5 Cup is a purpose-built racing car based on the MX-5 Miata roadster, developed by Mazda for its spec racing series. The Generation 2 (Mk2) MX-5 Cup car, introduced for the 2016 season, is based on the ND-generation MX-5 platform and features a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine producing approximately 160 horsepower, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission with close-ratio gearing optimized for circuit racing. The car weighs approximately 2,100 pounds ready to race, achieving excellent power-to-weight ratio and maintaining the momentum-based driving style that characterizes Spec Miata racing.
Built by Long Road Racing at Mazda's direction, each MX-5 Cup car features comprehensive racing modifications including a full roll cage, racing seat and harness, fire suppression system, spec Bosch engine management, adjustable coil-over suspension with Bilstein dampers, limited-slip differential, racing brake pads, 17-inch forged aluminum wheels with BFGoodrich g-Force Rival S spec tires, and optimized aerodynamics. The control formula ensures equal equipment across the field, with Mazda providing factory support and identical sealed engines to eliminate horsepower disparities. The MX-5 Cup series serves as North America's most popular spec racing championship and an official support series for major events including IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races. The MX-5 Cup provides affordable, competitive wheel-to-wheel racing with comprehensive manufacturer support, serving as a crucial development ground for aspiring professional drivers while offering gentleman racers intense competition in identical equipment where setup knowledge and driving skill determine results.
