The Mercedes-AMG A45 represents AMG's first hot hatch, based on the Mercedes A-Class platform and produced from 2013-2019 (W176 generation) before being replaced by the more powerful second-generation A45 S (W177). The first-generation A45 features AMG's hand-built M133 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 355-381 horsepower (depending on model year and market) from a production car four-cylinder, setting records for specific output. Power is delivered through a seven-speed AMG Speedshift DCT dual-clutch transmission to AMG's 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system with rear-biased torque distribution.
Weighing approximately 3,428 pounds (1,555 kg), the A45 achieves 0-60 mph in approximately 4.2 seconds with launch control, providing supercar-level acceleration in a compact hatchback package. The comprehensive performance equipment includes adaptive suspension with multiple drive modes, larger AMG brakes, 18 or 19-inch wheels with high-performance tires, aerodynamic body kit, quad exhaust outlets, and aggressive AMG interior appointments. The turbocharged 2.0L engine delivers strong boost across the rev range with characteristic AMG sound enhancement through the exhaust system. The A45 AMG offers practical five-door hatchback versatility with genuine AMG performance, all-weather AWD capability, and Mercedes luxury. The combination of record-setting four-cylinder power, sophisticated AWD, and practical packaging created one of the most capable hot hatches available, though some enthusiasts criticize the isolated, video-game-like driving experience compared to more engaging front-drive hot hatches. The A45 established AMG credibility in the compact performance car segment, proving that AMG engineering could create exciting performance from small-displacement turbo engines.
