The Subaru Impreza WRX STI third generation (GR/GV chassis, 2008-2014) represents significant evolution of Subaru's rally-bred performance sedan, featuring the EJ257 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four engine producing 305 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 290 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is delivered through a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission to Subaru's legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) allowing driver adjustment of front-to-rear torque split, plus mechanical limited-slip differentials front, center, and rear.

Weighing approximately 3,395 pounds, the STI achieves 0-60 mph in approximately 4.7-5.0 seconds with exceptional all-weather traction and rally car-derived handling dynamics. The third-generation STI introduced widebody sedan styling (hatchback available 2008-2011), improved interior quality, and refined ride compared to previous generations while maintaining hardcore performance credentials. Comprehensive equipment includes Brembo brakes, inverted front struts, multi-link rear suspension, 18-inch BBS wheels (gold finish on some special editions), functional hood scoop feeding top-mounted intercooler, and aggressive aero including large rear wing. The STI maintains Subaru's World Rally Championship heritage with technology directly derived from rally competition including all-wheel drive architecture, boxer engine layout for low center of gravity, and adjustable differentials. The combination of turbocharged boxer power, sophisticated AWD, manual transmission, and rally pedigree creates unique performance character distinct from European or Japanese RWD sports cars. The GR/GV STI has become increasingly appreciated as potentially the last traditional turbocharged boxer STI before Subaru transitions to new platforms and powertrains, with special editions like STI S206 commanding significant collector premiums.
