2016: The M140i was introduced as the successor to the M135i, featuring BMW’s new B58 3.0-liter inline-six engine, producing 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This was a notable power increase over the M135i. It offered both a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission, with rear-wheel drive as standard, making it unique among hatchbacks for its driving dynamics. Cosmetic changes included minor updates to the front bumper, new headlights, and taillight designs.
2017: BMW kept changes to a minimum in 2017, focusing instead on refining the features of the M140i. Optional features such as enhanced interior finishes and additional driver assistance options were available, including updated infotainment software. The driving dynamics, engine output, and design remained largely unchanged from the 2016 debut.
2018: The 2018 model received updates to BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, with a faster, more intuitive interface and optional touchscreen functionality. Some trims saw slight changes in interior materials and new color options. Additionally, BMW adjusted suspension tuning slightly for improved ride comfort and stability without compromising the sporty feel.
