La Toyota MR2 W20 (souvent appelée la MR2 de deuxième génération) a été produite de 1989 à 1999. Cette génération a introduit un design plus grand et plus raffiné par rapport à la première génération, avec un style inspiré des voitures de sport exotiques de l’époque, lui conférant une allure élégante et agressive. La MR2 W20 conservait la configuration moteur central arrière et propulsion, offrant un excellent équilibre et une tenue de route remarquable.
La MR2 W20 proposait deux motorisations principales :
- 2.2L 5S-FE quatre cylindres en ligne : atmosphérique, développant environ 130 hp, principalement destinée au marché américain.
- 2.0L 3S-GTE quatre cylindres en ligne turbocompressé : disponible sur les modèles turbo, produisant environ 200 hp aux États-Unis et jusqu’à 245 hp au Japon. La MR2 turbo offrait un gain de performance significatif, avec un 0-60 mph en moins de 6 secondes, la rendant compétitive face aux voitures de sport haut de gamme de l’époque.
Au cours de sa production, la MR2 W20 a bénéficié de mises à jour progressives. Les révisions notables de 1993 comprenaient des ajustements de la suspension pour corriger la tendance au survirage brutal et des améliorations pour optimiser la tenue de route. Une autre mise à jour en 1994 a ajouté des freins plus grands et quelques améliorations intérieures mineures. La MR2 W20 est reconnue pour son expérience de conduite captivante, son style exotique et sa capacité de préparation, en faisant un choix populaire parmi les passionnés.
