Der 128i verfügt über BMWs gefeierten saugmotorischen N52 3,0-Liter-Reihensechszylinder-Motor mit 230 PS (228 hp/172 kW) bei 6.500 U/min und 271 Nm Drehmoment bei 2.750 U/min. Trotz "Einstiegs"-1er-Coupé in Nordamerika liefert der 128i 0-100 km/h in 5,7 Sekunden mit Viertelmeilen-Zeiten Mitte-14 Sekunden, unterstützt durch relative Leichtigkeit des Autos.
