1993: Introduction of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type RA (GC8) as a lightweight, rally-inspired variant with no ABS, reduced soundproofing, and basic interior to save weight. Equipped with a close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission, limited-slip rear differential, and a driver-controlled center differential (DCCD) for improved handling. The engine produced around 250 horsepower, higher than the standard WRX.
1994: Engine output increased to 260 horsepower, with minor improvements to the DCCD system for better drivability and handling. Some models featured revised suspension tuning.
1995: Minor updates to improve reliability and performance, including revised ECU mapping. Weight-saving measures continued with limited comfort features, keeping the focus on rally performance.
1996: Power increased to approximately 275 horsepower. Subaru added reinforced suspension components and enhanced cooling, further aligning the car with rally specifications. Brake upgrades improved stopping power.
