La Honda Civic Type R FK8 rappresenta la punta di diamante prestazionale della decima generazione della Civic, prodotta dal 2017 al 2021 come hot hatch a trazione anteriore che ha stabilito nuovi riferimenti per i tempi sul giro al Nürburgring e le capacità in pista. Spinta dal motore turbo 2.0L K20C1 a quattro cilindri in linea che eroga 306 cavalli a 6.500rpm e 295 lb-ft di coppia, abbinato esclusivamente a un cambio manuale a sei marce che trasmette la potenza alle ruote anteriori attraverso un differenziale a slittamento limitato elicoidale, la FK8 ha offerto un envelope prestazionale senza precedenti rispetto al suo predecessore aspirato FK2. Con un peso di 3.117 libbre, la Type R ha raggiunto dinamiche di potenza peso impressionanti, permettendo uno 0-60mph in 4,9 secondi e una velocità massima superiore a 169mph, mentre il pacchetto aerodinamico aggressivo, che comprende un prominente alettone posteriore, splitter anteriore e una carrozzeria scolpita, ha generato vero carico aerodinamico anziché semplici effetti estetici. Le sospensioni adottavano ammortizzatori adattivi, una geometria a doppio asse dello sterzo anteriore che elimina il torque steer e un setup posteriore a multi-link che garantiva un bilanciamento eccezionale dell’handling, infrangendo i preconcetti sui limiti della trazione anteriore e ottenendo un tempo sul giro di 7:43.8 al Nürburgring Nordschleife, stabilendo il record per una vettura di serie a trazione anteriore al momento del lancio. Gli interni presentavano sedili sportivi rivestiti in Alcantara con supporto laterale eccezionale, badge rossi Type R distribuiti nell’abitacolo, quadro strumenti digitale che mostrava dati di performance in tempo reale inclusi g-force e pressione del turbo, e un’utilità hatchback sorprendentemente pratica che manteneva un’ottima usabilità quotidiana nonostante l’indole hardcore. La produzione ha coperto la versione iniziale 2017-2018 e il restyling del 2020, che ha introdotto aggiornamenti cosmetici minori, una taratura raffinata degli ammortizzatori e un sistema infotainment migliorato, pur mantenendo invariato il pacchetto meccanico di base. Le varianti in edizione limitata includevano le vernici Championship White e Sonic Gray Pearl, omaggiando le cromie storiche Type R, oltre alla versione Sport Line per i mercati europei con aspetto esterno più sobrio, eliminando l’alettone posteriore per coloro che preferivano un’estetica più discreta. La FK8 si è confrontata direttamente con Volkswagen Golf R, Ford Focus RS e Renault Megane RS nel segmento delle hot hatch più estreme, distinguendosi per la filosofia esclusivamente manuale, la dinamica di guida autentica e l’impegno incondizionato sulla trazione anteriore, mentre i concorrenti adottavano sempre più sistemi di trazione integrale. La produzione si è conclusa nel 2021 con la variant finale Limited Edition caratterizzata dalla vernice Sunlight Yellow e cerchi forgiati BBS leggeri, seguita dalla undicesima generazione FL5 Type R che ha proseguito l’evoluzione della powertrain turbo con chassis rivisto e un design esterno polarizzante.
