1991: E36 325i introduced replacing E30 generation. M50B25 2.5L inline-six with 189hp/181 lb-ft. DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder. MacPherson strut front, multi-link rear suspension. 50/50 weight distribution. 8.0s 0-60 mph, 145 mph top speed.
1992: M50TU engine introduced with VANOS variable valve timing improving midrange torque delivery. Lightweight plastic intake manifold, coil-on-plug ignition, knock sensor. Enhanced throttle response and daily drivability.
1993: Coupe and convertible body styles joined sedan configuration. Growing aftermarket support. Track day popularity establishing E36 as enthusiast favorite for modification and competition use.
1994: Continued production maintaining M50TU specification. Strong sales establishing 3-Series as compact sports sedan benchmark. Touring wagon variant introduced European markets.
1995: Final year M50-powered 325i before M52 engine transition. E36 established reputation reliability, driving dynamics, aftermarket modification potential creating enduring enthusiast following extending decades beyond production.
