Circuito dos Cristais, located near Curvelo in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is a relatively new racing circuit with a growing reputation. Inaugurated in 2016, it was designed by renowned architect Hermann Tilke, known for his work on numerous Formula 1 tracks. The circuit's name, "Circuit of Crystals," is derived from the region's rich mineral deposits.
The track boasts a challenging 4.42-kilometer (2.75-mile) layout featuring 18 turns, combining high-speed straights with technical corners. The design incorporates significant elevation changes, adding to the complexity and excitement for drivers. The circuit runs in a counter-clockwise direction. Key features include a long, sweeping turn 1, demanding braking zones, and a tight, twisty infield section that tests car balance and driver precision. There is also a lengthy back straight for overtaking opportunities.
Circuito dos Cristais is homologated to FIA Grade 3 standards, making it suitable for a variety of motorsport disciplines. It primarily hosts national racing series, including touring car championships like Stock Car Pro Series, Formula 4 Brazil, and various motorcycle racing events. The track also serves as a popular venue for track days and driver training programs. While not currently hosting international-level events, the track's modern facilities and challenging layout make it a potential future candidate.
What makes Circuito dos Cristais unique is its blend of modern design and natural terrain. The track is nestled within the hilly landscape, providing a visually stunning backdrop for racing. The elevation changes, combined with the varied corner types, create a demanding yet rewarding driving experience. Furthermore, the circuit's location in a region with a strong motorsport culture ensures a passionate fanbase and a vibrant atmosphere for events.
