Rockingham Speedway Notes

Rockingham Speedway, often referred to as "The Rock," is a historic racetrack located near Rockingham, North Carolina. Established on October 31, 1965, as a flat, one-mile oval, it was reconfigured in 1969 into a high-banked, D-shaped oval measuring approximately 1.017 miles. The track has been a significant venue in American motorsports, hosting numerous NASCAR events, including the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and Craftsman Truck Series. After a hiatus, NASCAR announced the return of the Xfinity and Truck Series to Rockingham in April 2025, marking a revival of its storied racing legacy.

In addition to its rich history, Rockingham Speedway has been a platform for various racing disciplines and driver experiences. For instance, a notable lap time recorded at the speedway is 1 minute and 2.97 seconds, achieved by a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V Mk1 equipped with Continental ExtremeContact Force tires.  This performance underscores the track's versatility and the diverse range of vehicles that have competed on its asphalt surface. As the speedway prepares for upcoming events, it continues to be a focal point for racing enthusiasts and a testament to the enduring appeal of motorsports in North Carolina.

Rock GP Notes

Located in Richmond County near Rockingham, this configuration served as the primary road course setup during periods when the oval facility hosted sports car racing and motorcycle events. The Rock GP represented the facility's most comprehensive road course challenge.

Operating the Rock GP showcased Rockingham's versatility beyond oval racing, with the configuration utilizing banking transitions and infield technical sections to create a hybrid American oval-road course layout. North Carolina's climate created year-round operating potential. The Rock GP configuration served as the facility's flagship road course variant before the venue's closure to professional racing, representing attempts to diversify revenue beyond traditional oval stock car events.
