The Volkswagen Beetle FUNCUP is a purpose-built single-seater racing car that uses only the silhouette styling of the classic Volkswagen Beetle, competing in the Fun Cup endurance racing series established in 1997. Despite appearances, these are not modified road cars but rather ground-up race car designs with tube-frame space chassis construction and modern racing components. The original Evo 1 specification featured a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder Audi/VW engine producing 130 horsepower (later generations used 1.9L turbo diesel with 165 HP and current 2.0L petrol with 172 HP), mounted in a mid-engine configuration ahead of the rear axle.
The FUNCUP car weighs approximately 740 kilograms (1,631 pounds) and uses a Sadev 5-speed sequential gearbox for rapid gear changes. Fully adjustable racing suspension and purpose-designed race brakes provide the performance necessary for endurance competition, with a top speed of approximately 124 mph (200 km/h). The series emphasizes equal equipment and strict technical regulations, ensuring close racing where team strategy, pit stop efficiency, and driver consistency determine results rather than budget. Fun Cup has become one of Europe's most popular endurance racing series, offering an accessible entry point into team-based endurance racing with multiple drivers sharing seat time in races lasting several hours, combining the nostalgia of Beetle styling with modern racing car performance and reliability.
