Porsche
987.2 Cayman Base
Notes
The Porsche 987.2 Cayman represents the second-generation base model Cayman produced from 2009 to 2012, featuring significant mechanical improvements over the earlier 987.1 generation. The 987.2 Cayman features an enlarged 2.9-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine (MA1.20/MA1.21, also known as the 9A1) producing 265-266 horsepower (198 kW), paired with either a precise 6-speed manual transmission or Porsche's advanced 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic. A crucial improvement in the 987.2 generation was the elimination of the troublesome Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bearing that plagued earlier water-cooled Porsches, significantly enhancing long-term reliability.
Performance figures include 0-60 mph in approximately 5.4 seconds with a top speed of 165 mph, while the mid-engine layout provides near-perfect weight distribution and exceptional handling balance. The base Cayman maintained a 9 horsepower advantage over its Boxster roadster sibling with the same displacement engine. Unlike the Cayman S which received Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), the base 2.9-liter engine retained traditional port fuel injection. The 987.2 Cayman offers the essential Porsche mid-engine sports car experience in its purest form, with naturally aspirated flat-six character, precise steering, excellent chassis balance, and the practical benefits of a fixed roof coupe. The combination of improved reliability, engaging naturally aspirated power delivery, and classic Porsche handling dynamics has made the 987.2 Cayman increasingly popular among enthusiasts seeking an affordable yet authentic Porsche sports car for both street and occasional track use.
