The Porsche 718 Boxster S (982 generation, 2016-present) is the performance variant of Porsche's mid-engine roadster, featuring a turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four engine producing 350 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 309 lb-ft of torque from 1,900-4,500 rpm. The 718 generation marked Porsche's controversial transition from naturally aspirated flat-six engines to turbocharged four-cylinder power, echoing the historic 718 race cars of the 1950s-60s. Power is delivered through either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds (manual) or 4.0 seconds (PDK with Sport Chrono Package) with top speed of 177 mph.
The Boxster S includes PASM adaptive suspension as standard, larger brakes, 19/20-inch staggered wheels, sport exhaust, and enhanced interior appointments compared to base Boxster models. Weighing approximately 3,153 pounds, the mid-engine layout provides near-perfect weight distribution and exceptional handling balance characteristic of the Boxster lineage. The turbocharged 2.5L engine delivers significantly more torque than previous naturally aspirated flat-six models, particularly in the midrange, though some enthusiasts lament the loss of traditional Porsche flat-six sound and linear power delivery.
