The Toyota GR86 is a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe developed in collaboration with Subaru, introduced as the successor to the Toyota 86 in 2022. It features a 2.4L naturally aspirated flat-four boxer engine that produces 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque—a notable increase over the previous model’s 2.0L engine. This new engine improves the GR86’s 0-60 mph time to around 6 seconds with the manual transmission, addressing previous complaints about power in the earlier generation.
The GR86 retains its driver-focused layout and low center of gravity, thanks to its boxer engine and lightweight construction. It comes with a choice of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The chassis has been stiffened for improved handling, and the suspension has been tuned to offer precise control and feedback, making it highly enjoyable on twisty roads or track days.
The exterior design is sleek and aerodynamic, featuring an aggressive front grille, LED headlights, and sculpted lines for a sporty aesthetic. Inside, the GR86 includes upgraded materials, a digital gauge cluster, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and bolstered sport seats. The Toyota GR86 is celebrated for its engaging driving dynamics, affordable price point, and balanced performance, making it a top choice for enthusiasts seeking a pure, accessible sports car experience.
