El Toyota MR2 Spyder (comercializado como MR-S en Japón) representa la evolución de tercera generación del chasis W30 de la saga de roadsters de motor central de Toyota, producido entre 1999 y 2007 como un deportivo descapotable ligero que prioriza la dinámica de manejo sobre la potencia pura. Introducido tras la discontinuación de la segunda generación SW20, el W30 cambió la filosofía de un rendimiento turboalimentado hacia una simplicidad atmosférica, empleando un motor 1.8L 1ZZ-FED de cuatro cilindros en línea que entrega 138 hp, combinado ya sea con una caja manual de cinco velocidades o una transmisión manual secuencial de seis velocidades, que transmite la potencia a las ruedas traseras mediante una configuración de motor central. Con un peso de apenas 2,195 libras gracias a una filosofía de diseño minimalista que eliminó el techo fijo, los accesorios eléctricos y el aislamiento acústico, el Spyder logró una dinámica peso-potencia excepcional, permitiendo una experiencia de conducción envolvente a pesar de sus cifras modestas de potencia. El chasis contaba con suspensión delantera de puntales MacPherson y una geometría trasera revisada que mejoraba la respuesta al giro en comparación con las tendencias de sobreviraje brusco del SW20, un desafío para conductores inexpertos. Toyota posicionó al W30 como un coche asequible para uso los fines de semana en circuito y para curvas en montaña, más que como un gran turismo, reflejado en un interior espartano carente de comodidades pero que ofrece una sensación de dirección directa y una posición de conducción íntima. La producción abarcó dos actualizaciones principales: los modelos previos al facelift de 1999 a 2002 y las versiones post-facelift de 2003 a 2007, que recibieron faros revisados, acabado interior actualizado y ajustes menores en la suspensión. La opción de transmisión manual secuencial representó el intento de Toyota por la tecnología de cambio manual automatizado, pero resultó comercialmente fallida debido a la lentitud en los cambios y su funcionamiento brusco, permaneciendo la caja manual tradicional como la opción preferida entre los entusiastas. Las ventas del Spyder en el mercado estadounidense alcanzaron aproximadamente 27,000 unidades en nueve años de modelo antes de su discontinuación sin un reemplazo directo, ya que Toyota abandonó el segmento de deportivos asequibles hasta la colaboración 86/GR86 con Subaru.
