Der Honda Civic Type R FK8 repräsentiert das Performance-Flaggschiff der zehnten Civic-Generation, produziert von 2017 bis 2021 als frontgetriebener Hot Hatch, der neue Maßstäbe für FWD-Nürburgring-Rundenzeiten und Track-Fähigkeiten setzte. Angetrieben vom turbogeladenen 2,0L K20C1 Reihenvierzylinder mit 306 PS bei 6.500 U/min und 295 lb-ft Drehmoment, ausschließlich gekoppelt an ein sechsgängiges Schaltgetriebe, das die Vorderachse über ein schrägverzahntes Sperrdifferenzial antreibt, bot der FK8 eine beispiellose Performance im Vergleich zum saugmotorbetriebenen FWD-Vorgänger FK2. Bei einem Gewicht von 3.117 Pfund erzielte der Type R eine bemerkenswerte Leistungsgewichtsdynamik, die eine Beschleunigung von 0–60 mph in 4,9 Sekunden sowie eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von über 169 mph ermöglichte. Das aggressive Aerodynamikpaket mit markantem Heckflügel, Frontsplitter und ausgeformter Karosserie generierte echten Abtrieb statt bloßer Styling-Effekte. Die Fahrwerksabstimmung setzte auf adaptive Dämpfer, eine Dual-Axial-McPherson-Vorderachse zur Eliminierung von Antriebseinflüssen der Lenkung und ein Mehrlenker-Hinterachs-Setup, das außergewöhnliche Fahrbalancen ermöglichte und bestehende Vorurteile gegen Frontantrieb zerschlug. So erreichte er eine Nordschleifen-Rundenzeit von 7:43,8 und sicherte sich damit den FWD-Serienwagenrekord bei Markteinführung. Im Innenraum fanden sich mit Alcantara bezogene Sportsitze mit hervorragender Seitenführung, rote Type R-Embleme im gesamten Cockpit, ein digitales Kombiinstrument mit Echtzeit-Performance-Daten inklusive g-Kräften und Ladedruckanzeige, sowie überraschend praktische Kompaktwagen-Vielseitigkeit trotz kompromissloser Performance-Ausrichtung. Die Fertigung umfasste die anfängliche Spezifikation von 2017–2018 und die überarbeitete 2020er-Facelift-Version mit kleineren optischen Retuschen, verfeinertem Dämpfer-Setup und verbessertem Infotainment, bei gleichbleibendem grundsätzlichen mechanischem Paket. Limitierte Sondermodelle umfassten die Lackierungen Championship White und Sonic Gray Pearl als Hommage an traditionelle Type R-Farbvarianten sowie die Sport Line-Ausstattung für den europäischen Markt, die eine dezente Außenoptik mit Wegfall des auffälligen Heckflügels für Käufer mit zurückhaltender Ästhetik bot. Der FK8 konkurrierte direkt mit dem Volkswagen Golf R, Ford Focus RS und Renault Megane RS im Segment der kompromisslosen Hot Hatches und unterschied sich durch die Philosophie des ausschließlichen Handschaltgetriebes, natürlich engagiertes Fahrverhalten und kompromisslose Frontantriebsbindung, während Wettbewerber zunehmend auf Allradantriebe setzten. Die Produktion endete 2021 mit der letzten Limited Edition in Sunlight Yellow und leichten BBS-Forged-Rädern, gefolgt vom elften FL5 Type R, der die Entwicklung des Turbopowertriebs mit überarbeitetem Fahrwerk und polarisierendem Außendesign fortsetzt.
