Der Mini Cooper S R53 repräsentiert die aufgeladene Leistungsvariante der ersten Generation, produziert von 2002 bis 2006, die die sportlichen Qualifikationen des modernen MINI durch den Eaton M45 Roots-Kompressor etablierte, der 163-170 PS aus einem kompakten 1,6-Liter-Tritec-Vierzylinder-Motor lieferte, während die Go-Kart-Handling-Philosophie des originalen Mini beibehalten wurde. Der aufgeladene Tritec-Motor, der 163 PS bei 6.000 U/min mit 155 Pfund-Fuß Drehmoment ab 4.000 U/min produzierte, lieferte überraschende Leistung und erreichte 0-60 mph in 7,2 Sekunden. Das Facelift im September 2004 brachte wesentliche Verbesserungen einschließlich Leistungssteigerung auf 170 PS durch überarbeitetes Kompressor-Riemenscheibenverhältnis, verbesserte Ladeluftkühler-Effizienz und rekalibriertes Motormanagement. Die Produktion endete 2006 mit der Cooper S R56 der zweiten Generation, die eine Turbolader-Motorarchitektur einführte und die charakteristische Kompressor-Konfiguration ersetzte, während R53-Exemplare eine engagierte Enthusiasten-Anhängerschaft beibehalten, die mechanische Einfachheit und Kompressor-Zuverlässigkeit schätzen.
