Note

NOTE ANNO

1984: The MR2 debuted in Japan, Europe, and Australia. It featured the 1.6L 4A-GE engine producing 112 hp, with a lightweight body, mid-engine layout, and rear-wheel drive, emphasizing balance and handling. Key features included pop-up headlights, a compact design, and a driver-focused interior with a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission.
1985: The MR2 launched in North America with the same 4A-GE engine and core design as other markets. The car gained popularity for its affordable performance and agile handling. Minor updates were introduced to meet regional safety and emissions standards.
1986: Toyota made minor interior updates and added new color options. This year also saw improvements to the suspension tuning for better handling stability. The MR2 continued with the same engine and basic design.
1987: Toyota introduced the supercharged version (MR2 SC) in select markets, including Japan and North America. The supercharged 4A-GZE engine produced around 145 hp, offering a substantial boost in performance and low-end torque. The supercharged MR2 also featured a stronger transmission, upgraded brakes, and a rear spoiler. Exterior changes included unique badging and slight modifications to accommodate the supercharger’s intercooler.
1988: The MR2 continued with minor updates, with Toyota focusing on reliability improvements and subtle interior refinements. The supercharged variant remained available, with its higher power output making it a favorite among enthusiasts.
1989: The final production year for the AW11 MR2 saw no major changes, as Toyota prepared for the launch of the second-generation MR2 (SW20) in 1990. Production ended for the AW11, marking the close of the first-generation MR2.
