R8 LMS

Заметки

The first-generation Audi R8 LMS, introduced in 2009 and based on the original Audi R8 road car, marked Audi’s entry into the GT3 racing class. Designed specifically to compete under GT3 regulations, this model used a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine, initially producing around 500 hp (with variations based on Balance of Performance adjustments across different series). Unlike the all-wheel-drive R8 road car, the R8 LMS was rear-wheel drive, adhering to GT3 requirements. The car featured a 6-speed sequential gearbox, optimized for fast, durable shifting under racing conditions.

The R8 LMS was equipped with a lightweight aluminum and steel chassis, combined with extensive carbon fiber use in body panels and aerodynamic components like the large rear wing, front splitter, and side intakes. These modifications maximized downforce, stability, and cornering ability. Audi further optimized the R8 LMS for endurance racing by integrating robust cooling systems for both the engine and brakes, enhancing reliability across long stints. This first-gen R8 LMS quickly gained a reputation for its blend of power, balance, and reliability, and went on to compete successfully in various GT3 series worldwide, including a notable victory at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, establishing Audi as a strong competitor in GT racing.

2009: The original R8 LMS GT3 was launched, based on the first-generation Audi R8. Powered by a 5.2L V10 engine producing around 500 hp, it featured rear-wheel drive (complying with GT3 regulations) and a 6-speed sequential gearbox. The car was designed with a lightweight, aluminum-intensive chassis and comprehensive aerodynamics, including a large rear wing, front splitter, and side intakes.
2012: Audi introduced the R8 LMS Ultra, with improvements focused on aerodynamics, cooling, and weight reduction. Key changes included a larger rear wing, a reworked front splitter, lighter doors, and better engine and brake cooling. The car’s suspension was also updated for improved handling, and the gearbox received upgrades to handle increased loads. The Ultra quickly became a favorite for endurance racing due to its improved reliability and efficiency.
