O Chevrolet Corvette C7 Z06 representa a variante de alta performance da sétima geração da General Motors, produzida entre 2015 e 2019, como uma derivação superalimentada focada em pista da arquitetura C7 Stingray, destinada a motoristas entusiastas que buscam desempenho de supercarro acessível. Introduzido no North American International Auto Show de 2014, o C7 Z06 marcou o retorno à indução forçada após a geração C6 Z06 naturalmente aspirada, incorporando um conjunto de powertrain, aerodinâmica e hardware de chassi totalmente revisados, transformando o Corvette básico em uma arma credível para pista, competindo contra Porsche 911 GT3, Nissan GT-R e concorrentes europeus exóticos a um preço substancialmente inferior. Fabricado na Bowling Green Assembly Plant, em Kentucky, o C7 Z06 estabeleceu credenciais impressionantes de desempenho, atingindo aceleração de 0-60 MPH em 2,95 segundos com velocidade máxima de 186 MPH, enquanto os primeiros anos sofreram com notórios problemas de superaquecimento durante uso prolongado em pista, levando à extensão da garantia pela GM e redesign do sistema de arrefecimento para a produção a partir de 2017.
O motor LT4 V8 superalimentado de 6,2 litros produz 650 cavalos de potência a 6.400 RPM com torque de 650 lb-ft a 3.600 RPM, por meio do supercompressor Eaton R1740 TVS de 1,7 litro girando a 20.000 RPM e gerando pressão de boost de 9,4 PSI. A relação de compressão de 10,0:1 equilibra eficiência da indução forçada com compatibilidade a gasolina comum, enquanto o sistema de lubrificação dry-sump permite curvas agressivas sem preocupações de fome de óleo, comuns em configurações wet-sump. A potência é transmitida por uma escolha entre a transmissão manual Tremec TR6070 de sete marchas com tecnologia rev-matching ou a automática Hydramatic 8L90 de oito velocidades com paddle shifters e programação performance algorithm transmission (PAT), otimizando os pontos de troca para aplicações em pista. O tubo de torque em fibra de carbono conecta o motor ao transaxle montado na traseira, mantendo a distribuição de peso quase perfeita de 50/50, fundamental para a arquitetura mid-front-engine do Corvette. As calibrações iniciais da transmissão automática contribuíram significativamente para os problemas de superaquecimento nos anos-modelo 2015-2016, devido às relações de marchas mais próximas que mantinham rotações mais altas durante sessões prolongadas em pista, em comparação com as marchas mais longas e pontos de troca controlados pelo motorista da transmissão manual.
A engenharia do chassi incorpora construção em space frame de alumínio com capô, painel do teto e painéis traseiros em fibra de carbono, reduzindo o peso em ordem de marcha para 1.598 kg (3.524 libras) com o pacote Z07 Performance Package, que inclui freios cerâmicos de carbono. O sistema de amortecimento adaptativo Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 oferece firmeza da suspensão variável continuamente, com o Performance Traction Management (PTM) integrando controle de tração, controle de estabilidade e programação do diferencial eletrônico com cinco modos selecionáveis pelo motorista, que vão desde Weather até Track. A controvérsia do superaquecimento dominou a experiência inicial dos proprietários do C7 Z06, afetando especialmente as variantes automáticas de 2015-2016 durante o uso em track days, com temperaturas do motor e transmissão acionando modos protetivos de redução de potência que limitavam o desempenho em condições de carga elevada prolongada. A GM implementou extensão da garantia para os anos-modelo 2015-2018, fornecendo retrofits de radiador conforme especificação 2019, recalibração da transmissão automática, programação revisada do controle do motor que antecipava a ativação do ventilador de arrefecimento e alteração na geometria da tampa do intercooler para melhorar a dissipação térmica. Soluções aftermarket de Callaway, LG Motorsports e preparadores especializados ofereceram revisões completas do sistema de arrefecimento, com custos acima de US$ 10.000, para superar limitações fundamentais no manejo térmico inerentes às restrições do pacote superalimentado. O ano-modelo 2017 introduziu melhorias de fábrica no sistema de arrefecimento, incluindo aumento da seção central do capô, maior capacidade do radiador, programação revisada da transmissão e design aprimorado do intercooler, reduzindo substancialmente os problemas térmicos em relação à produção anterior. A fabricação foi encerrada em 2019 com a introdução da arquitetura mid-engine do Corvette C8, que reinventou fundamentalmente a filosofia de design do Corvette após 66 anos de configuração front-engine, enquanto os valores do C7 Z06 no mercado de usados variam entre US$ 50.000 e US$ 75.000, dependendo da quilometragem, nível de especificação e atualizações documentadas no sistema de arrefecimento.
