2015: The Mk7 Golf R debuted with a 2.0L turbocharged TSI engine producing 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. It featured Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and a refined, performance-oriented interior with unique "R" branding and trim.
2016: The Golf R continued with minimal changes, focusing on performance and reliability. Volkswagen added minor interior refinements and updated the infotainment system software.
2017: Volkswagen updated the Golf R’s infotainment system with a larger touchscreen and added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Additional driver-assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, were introduced as options.
2018: The 2018 model brought a minor facelift with revised LED headlights, updated taillights, and a refreshed bumper design. Volkswagen also introduced the 7-speed DSG transmission, replacing the previous 6-speed DSG for quicker shifts and improved fuel efficiency. New color options and minor interior updates were added for further customization.
2019: The final production year for the Mk7 Golf R, with no major changes. Volkswagen offered the Golf R with a special “Spektrum” color program, allowing buyers to choose from a selection of 40 unique paint colors. This year marked the end of the Mk7 generation as Volkswagen prepared for the next generation Golf R.
