The Toyota MR2 W20 (often referred to as the second-generation MR2) was produced from 1989 to 1999. This generation introduced a larger, more refined design compared to the first-generation MR2, with styling inspired by exotic sports cars of the time, giving it a sleek and aggressive appearance. The W20 MR2 maintained the mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, providing excellent balance and handling.

The W20 MR2 came with two primary engine options:

  1. 2.2L 5S-FE inline-four: Naturally aspirated, producing around 130 hp, primarily for the U.S. market.
  2. 2.0L 3S-GTE turbocharged inline-four: Available in turbocharged models, producing around 200 hp in the U.S. and up to 245 hp in Japan. The turbocharged MR2 offered a significant boost in performance, with a 0-60 mph time of under 6 seconds, making it competitive with higher-end sports cars of the time.

Throughout its production, the W20 MR2 saw incremental updates. Notable revisions came in 1993, which included suspension adjustments to address the car’s tendency toward snap oversteer and refinements to improve overall handling. Another update in 1994 added larger brakes and minor interior improvements. The W20 MR2 is celebrated for its engaging driving experience, exotic styling, and tunability, making it a popular choice among enthusiasts.

1989: The second-generation MR2 (W20) launched in Japan with two engine options: a 2.0L naturally aspirated 3S-GE engine and the 2.0L turbocharged 3S-GTE engine, producing around 220 hp in Japan. This model featured a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with a design inspired by exotic sports cars, giving it a sleek, aerodynamic appearance.
1990: The MR2 W20 was introduced in the U.S., with a 2.2L 5S-FE naturally aspirated engine (130 hp) and the 2.0L 3S-GTE turbocharged engine (200 hp). The U.S. turbo version came with larger brakes, a limited-slip differential, and upgraded suspension.
1992: Minor refinements were introduced, with improvements to materials and slight interior upgrades. Toyota made adjustments to the car’s stability systems to improve handling characteristics, but the core design and performance remained largely the same.
1993: Toyota made significant suspension revisions to address the MR2's tendency toward snap oversteer. The rear suspension geometry was modified, and sway bars were added, improving stability and reducing oversteer, making the car more forgiving at the limit. The turbocharged model received upgraded brakes for better stopping power, and interior options were expanded with updated upholstery choices.
1996: The MR2 was discontinued in the U.S. market, but it continued to be sold in Japan and select other markets. Japanese models received slight power increases for the 3S-GE engine, and Toyota made further refinements to improve overall quality and reliability.
